Since 1993 I have been in independent practice as an NHS and private Consultant. In 1996 I was awarded Master of Surgery from the University of London for my research on Correlation of Nasal Symptoms with Objective findings, and Surgical Outcome Measurement.

I see and treat around 2,000 new ENT patient referrals and over 3,000 follow-up patients per year, referred from General Medical Practitioners for specialist opinion on the full spectrum of ENT disorders. I carry out approximately 500 ENT surgical operations per year, with special interest in microsurgery of the middle ear, endoscopic sinus surgery, and laser surgery. I train and supervise junior doctors in ENT.

I have published papers on sinusitis, physiology of nasal obstruction, vocal cord paralysis, HIV/AIDS in ENT, use of lasers, day case tonsillectomy, stapes surgery, and Bone Anchored Hearing Aids. I co-authored a book of multiple choice questions for trainees covering the whole spectrum of ENT. My Master's thesis focussed on the correlation between nasal symptoms and objective findings in relation to the measurement of surgical outcome. I have a special interest in evidence based medicine and act as a protocol reviewer for the Cochrane collaboration. I have given numerous regional, national and international presentations on my research and am generally thought to be a good public speaker.

I have been writing medico-legal reports since 1990, starting with large numbers of industrial noise damage cases in Sheffield. I have always followed the principles of impartiality behind the Woolf guidelines, well before these became formalized in the Civil Procedures Rules 1999. I currently produce around 20 medico-legal reports per year, some commissioned by claimant, some defendant, and increasingly as a single joint expert. In the personal injury field, common areas for reports are industrial noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, and various injuries from road traffic accidents. I am available for reports in medical negligence cases, I have produced reports commissioned by both claimant and defendant solicitors and have no no bias or preference.

I have a scientific, analytical and logical approach to this work. I have sound grasp of legal principles and the Civil Procedures Rules. I can sort, summarise and present a case effectively. Mrs Fairley runs a highly efficient office and we have a rapid turnaround for reports. All reports are produced according to current rules and protocols.

Court appearances may be difficult to fit in with a very busy NHS and private medical practice.
